Abstract

At the time of writing, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the world's focus with a global incidence of more than 4 million cases and more than 300 000 deaths. The USA is the epicentre of the pandemic with more than 1·2 million cases and over 80 000 deaths. These numbers are probably underestimates. However, despite these very troubling times, putting these numbers into some context via a comparison with influenza might be useful.
