Abstract

A new reversing 6 High cold strip mill came into operation in Sumitomo's Wakayama Steel Works on Feb. 16, 1988 The new mill was constructed in order to satisfy the requirements of our customers for cold rolled products with extremely accurate dimensions. In order to achieve accurate cold rolling, this mill incorporates many of the latest techniques. In particular it contains: (1) A fully networked computer control system comprised of microcomputers. (2) An accurate mathematical rolling model for set-up control in Supervisory Computer Control (SCC). (3) A modified Automatic Gauge Control system (AGC) which is reinforced by the reel torque control system which includes a strip tension observer. (4) An Autornatic flatness Shape Control system (ASC) which controls strip flatness by utilizing several actuators according to the different types of work roll. These techniques have produced the following results:On a 0.5nlm thick strip, thickness variation can be controlled within ±2.5μm and flatness variation can be controlledwithin ±6δI-unit. Consequently, this new mill has rewarded our investrnent in thisproject, and has increased the ability of our company to produce high quality cold strip products.
