Abstract

This paper introduces a new construction practice, termed as the tunnel-column method, used in constructing a metro station in Beijing, China. The station is located just under the western side of Tian'anmen Square. A numerical analysis was performed for the new method before the construction. The numerical prediction agreed well with in situ measurements, the ground movement induced by excavation was well controlled. The experience of this project is valuable to the similar problems of large-scale underground excavation in urban areas.
