Abstract

NO x storage and reduction capacities of H 3PW 12O 40·6H 2O were measured under representative exhaust lean gas mixture conditions. The efficiency of sorption was approximately 50%. Upon switching to a short, rich excursion, a small portion of NO x was released as NO, though a fraction of the pre-absorbed NO x were reduced. This process proved to be slow. However the addition of 1% Pt led to an increase of the efficiency of absorption from 50% to 85%. During the rich phase, only a small reduction was obtained but the NO x desorbed almost exclusively as pure NO within less than 3 min. These released NO x are reduced very quickly by a three-way catalyst housed in a second catalytic bed with an overall efficiency approaching 80%.
