Abstract

Summary An interactive CAD/CAM system dedicated to the design and manufacture of sheet metal products, has been developed. This paper discusses the unique method used by the system for product definition. The product is defined based on the principles of zero thickness and zero bend radii as well as on manufacturing constraints. First, the product is defined in 2-D using nominal dimensions. Then, transformation from the 2-D nominal layout to the real 3-D product is performed by means of manufacturing constraints. These constraints, including bending, welding, and critical dimensions, introduce an important aspect of design for manufacturing.
