Abstract

It has been predicted that Internet of Things (IoT) connections will be more than 30 billion in 2020. IoT will play an important role in the future 5G era and become new profit growth for mobile operators. Due to the saturation of human to human (H2H) communications, IoT will be the new chance for mobile operators. Especially, along with the development of cellular IoT technology, i.e., Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) and LTE enhancements for Machine Type Communications (eMTC), mobile operators have proposed “big connections” strategy to develop IoT service. However, the network designed for H2H communications may not be good for the massive IoT connections. In this paper, we propose a cellular network framework for 5G massive IoT connections. Firstly, we briefly introduce the NB-IoT and eMTC from the aspect of protocol volume, key technologies and applications. Secondly, we analyze the existed network framework. At last, we give our proposed network framework for massive IoT connections.
