Abstract
Observations derived from three groups of investigations have been brought together to serve as a basis for a new classification of affective disorders. The investigations were those concerned with (1) the relationship of ‘endogenous’ and ‘neurotic’ depression (2) the dividing line between depressive illness and anxiety states and (3) the associations of affective and schizoaffective disorders. The classification takes the form of a logical decision tree entailing distinctions that have to be made at each of 4 hierarchical levels. A fifth subsidiary level depicts the relationships of affective and schizoaffective disorders. A reasonable measure of correlation obtains between the classification and the pattern of treatment response within affective Disorders.)
