Abstract

A leafspot on red mangrove, Rhizophora mangle L., was collected by District Plant Inspectors R. W. Swanson and R. T. McMillan, Jr. at Fairchild Tropical Gardens, Miami, Florida, January 16, 1962. Specimens submitted to me for diagnosis showed a species of Cercospora fruiting abundantly on the under surface of the lesion. A survey of literature (1-10) and consultation with Dr. Charles Chupp of Cornell University, Professor Erdman West of the University of Florida and Dr. C. R. Benjamin, Principal Mycologist of the United States Department of Agriculture, indicated that the fungus apparently is a new species, making the Rhizophoraceae a new host family for the genus, Cercospora. Since this appears to be the only species of Cercospora known to occur on the genus, Rhizophora, the following name and technical description of the fungus is proposed:
