Abstract

Hydrothermal reaction of cadmium iodide (CdI2) and 1,3-di(4-pyridyl)propane (dpp) results in the formation of the 2-D coordination polymer [Cd2(µ-ddp)4I4]n (1) where the Cd(II) ions assume octahedral I2N4 geometries. The dpp ligands adopt anti-anti (TT) and gauche-gauche′ (GG′) conformations. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals that 1 decomposes in two steps comprising dissociation of one dpp ligand followed by complete decomposition of the framework corresponding to the remaining three dpp ligands and iodides. Polymer 1 is luminescent at 386 nm.
