Abstract

It is well known that the Basinski model for the deviation from the Cottrell-Stokes law is based on the equation derived by Foreman for the critical stress which induces the operation of a Frank-Read source. In this paper it is shown that the Foreman equation may be derived also from the Seeger theory of thermally activated dislocation motion which allows the coefficients in the Foreman equation to be determined explicitly. In the original version of the Basinski model this was not possible. Consequently the extension of the Basinski model in this way is discussed and compared with another model for the deviation from the Cottrell-Stokes law proposed recently by Mecking and Kocks. Moreover, the results on the experimental observation of the sudden increased deviation from the Cottrell-Stokes law are quoted and analytically interpreted by means of the extended model.
