Abstract

Silver cones were used in the past and still are being used as endodontic solid-core filling material by many clinicians because they are easy to insert and have a definitive radiographic appearance. Many investigators have discouraged the use of silver cones because they produce corrosive by-products that can cause an inflammatory response. To eliminate the problem of corrosion. Teflon-coated silver points were implanted in six two-rooted mandibular canine teeth. A double control was used in the canine maxillary jaw—no points were placed in one tooth whereas, in the others, uncharged Teflon points were used. This pilot study suggests that silver cones coated with negatively charged Teflon may enhance the formation of osteodentin incrementally. The Teflon coating may partially or completely eliminate the problem of corrosion.
