Abstract

Inservice training to promote health education is important and, for it to be truly effective, teachers must be intimately involved from the beginning. This article describes the operation of the Portal School Program at Arizona State University which is one method for promoting health education in elementary schools. The program is easy to implement and has been shown to be effective. The program uses a three-phase approach of development, dissemination, and review. It provides for the development of teacher designed health education materials, promotes the use of these materials in the classroom, and provides a mechanism for their review and refinement.
