Abstract
Turkish is a typical agglutinating language. Despite its apparent morphological characteristics, this language has been analysed in many studies as an inflecting language so that a single affix expresses more than one category in verbal inflectional paradigms. However, this “multifunctional” view ignores the pragmatic and discourse-bound effects in the interpretation of sentences. In this paper, I will reject the claims stating that Turkish has multifunctional inflectional affixes, and develop a zero morpheme analysis for the inflectional categories to offer a new classification of the affixes of verbal inflectional categories in that language. The solution here, based on assuming a morphological means such as zero morpheme in Turkish grammar in order to separate inflectional categories as aspect, mood and tense in verbal paradigms is not only in accordance with the morphological typology of this language but also in accordance with the unexpected behavior of some temporal adverbs.
