Abstract

A neutron spin echo spectrometer using superconducting magnets has been built and tested for operation. The effect of the inhomogeneity of the magnetic field integral on the observability of the spin echo signal has been discussed on the basis of matrix analysis of neutron spin behavior and compared with the experimental results. In order to achieve an energy resolution of 10 neV, it is shown to be necessary to realize a relative inhomogeneity of the magnetic field integral as low as 10 −6.
