Abstract

High pressure neutron scattering experiments were performed on the dimerized singlet ground-state system Cs 3Cr 2Br 9 to look for a possible occurence of magnetic order. The lattice parameters at 4.2 K under an applied pressure of 20 kbar were determined. The a axis of the hexagonal lattice is reduced by 0.64%, while the compression is 6.1% for the c axis. No magnetic order is expected to occur from this anistropy of the compressibilities. The expected displacement of the singlet-triplet excitation towards higher energies with applied pressure is observed. From these data we estimate a value of 15 meV/Å for ∂ J/∂ R.
