Abstract

In the light of the continually increasing complexity of design requirements on electromagnetic energy converters, integration of 1) modeling and problem formulation and 2) the optimization including selection of an optimization code seem to be a still widely uncovered but promising field. The mathematical reformulation of otherwise well-known analytical equations to take advantage of a powerful global deterministic optimization technique, in this case, convex optimization, was illustrated. The example cases were the optimization of several performance criteria of a BLDC permanent magnet motor with the use of soft magnetic composites and 3-D flux distribution. The results can be considered as elements of a library of tools leading toward a more reliable and efficient optimization of electromechanical energy converters.
