Abstract

A necessary condition for equilibrium in diplo-diplo self-incompatible mating systems has been obtained. The result is completely general, applying to systems with an arbitrary number of mating types based upon an arbitrary genetic basis. Actually, two different, but analogous, necessary conditions have been obtained. One corresponds to the mass action model; the other, to the limited competition model. Isoplethy automatically satisfies the necessary condition for each model. The same is true for the restrictive situation that has been referred to as “proportional partitioning.” In dimorphic systems, any equilibrium must be either isoplethic or proportionally partitioned. In systems with more than two mating types, the necessary condition for equilibrium can be satisfied by other, anisoplethic methods; however, for such equilibria the necessary conditions are different for the limited competition model and the mass action model.
