Abstract

In this study, the dyeing properties of a natural dye, extracted from the leaves of mimusops elengi Linn, on cotton and silk fabric were examined. Leaves are always an attractive choice as a raw material for natural dyes since they are readily available and reproducible compare to other parts of the plant without damaging the trees. The dye component in leaves of mimusops elengi is easily extractable by aqueous extraction process and the amount of achievable crude dye is exceptionally good. The dye extracts itself as well as mixing with various mordant including a natural one were applied to the fabrics by using pre-, simultaneous- and post-mordanting techniques. Impressive results were found for the color strength and fastness properties of dyed fabrics. Various shades and excellent color fastness of dyed samples were observed. Therefore, the eco-friendly natural dye extracted from the leaves of mimusops elengi can be an attractive choice for dying the cotton and silk fabrics with various elegant shades.
