Abstract

There are now four juvenile institutions (two reformatory schools and two correctional schools) for the convicted juvenile in Taiwan. Two of them were just transformed to the correctional school to enhance the efficiency of juvenile institutions on July 1, 1999. In light of evaluating these two kinds of institutions, a national survey focusing on comparison between themwas conducted in 2003. According to the official report, the recidivism rate reveals no significant difference among these institutions, but the cost for one student in the correctional school (US$14,319 per year) is far more than for one student in the reformatory school (US$8,842 per year). The survey will be administered to students to identify which correctional models play the most important role in Taiwan's juvenile justice system. Findings reveal that the style of institution has no influence on juveniles' perceptions of either the institution or successful achievement of correctional treatment.
