Abstract

One of six American women is a victim of sexual assault, which affects 17 million American women. In 20022003, a total of 198,000 sexual assaults were reported in the United States. The incidence of sexual-assault-related pregnancy is 15%, accounting for approximately 32,000 pregnancies per year in the United States. More than 50% of these pregnancies result in abortion. The acute-care sexual-assault visit is the optimal time to offer emergency contraception (EC) for the prevention of an unintended pregnancy.
