Abstract

A novel intercalation compound of layered titanate (K2Ti4O9) with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(N-methylpyridinium-4-yl) porphyrinato cobalt(III), CoTMPyP, has been successfully synthesized through a guest–guest ion exchange route. Its structural characterization was carried out by means of XRD, IR, elemental analysis and SEM. The CV results of CoTMPyP–Ti4O9 modified electrode showed a pair of redox peaks and an irreversible cathodic peak corresponding to the stepwise reduction of CoIIITMPyP ion. The intercalated cobalt porphyrin also displayed its good electrocatalytic activity for the reduction of oxygen in neutral medium. The reduction peak current had a linear relationship with the square root of scan rates, indicating the catalytic reaction was governed by oxygen diffusion.
