Abstract

A large multiwire proportional counter with spherical drift chamber has been designed and constructed. The sensitive area is 700 × 700 mm 2 and the radius of the first drift sphere is 1000 mm. A low background (≦0.0004 counts/(min×mm 2)), high quantum efficiency and stable performance enabled long term γ-scattering experiments with the RSMR-technique. This chamber is also applicable to X-ray crystallography of single crystals of macromolecules. The entire pattern is resolved into 1024×1024 pixels. Reflexions from crystals with cell dimensions of 100 A can easily be separated. Cones of 2.5 A real space resolution can be measured simultaneously with MoK α radiation.
