Abstract

Compared to other psychiatric disorders, few genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been conducted for the anxiety disorders. Genetic epidemiological studies have indicated elements of both shared and disorder-specific genetic risk among generalized anxiety, panic, social anxiety, agoraphobia, and specific phobias. This suggests the most informative approach is to test their association with susceptibility variants as a group of genetically-related phenotypes. Previously, one meta-analytic GWAS (ANGST) identified a small number of novel loci significantly associated with shared anxiety disorder susceptibility. In the current study, we model the disorders in a multivariate manner in a sample of around 17,000 US soldiers for inclusion in GWAS. The results are compared with those from the prior analysis, and a larger meta-analysis is performed to expand the number of discovered loci for anxiety disorders.
