A multipurpose radiation service center

Abstract

Within the last decade radiation processing techniques had become more and more an important tool of modern chemistry, technology and medicine. Most of industrial irradiation equipment had been installed in the US and Japan up today. However there is a growing interest in Western Europe too. First industrial equipments had been installed, others are ordered. In Germany, AEG-Telefunken is working as a suplier of irradiation equipment since more than ten years. There is a close cooperation with Radiation Dynaminc Inc., Westbury, N.Y. Radiation sources are available for most industrial applications. As a special service AEG is establishing a multipurpose radiation service center in Hamburg-Wedel, Germany. This center shall be used by a host of companies to investigate the effects of radiation on a broad range of materials, to develop special processing equipment, to process customer supplied products and to perform R & D work and contracts. Initially this service center will be equipped with one research type High-Power X-Ray Unit (200 kV/32 mA) and one industrial type Dynamitron accelerator (1500 kV/37, 5 kW). Right from the beginning, handling systems are available for radiation crosslinking of wire and cable insulations, of plastic films, for irradiation treatment of components and parts of different types, and coatings as well as sewage sludge, and waste water. Other handling systems will be added sometimes later. As an additional service the Company's already existing material and environmental testing laboratory will be available. It is evident that this service center will fill an existing gap and will be an impact for commercialization of radiation processing techniques also in the European part of this world. Interested people are invited to use this center for development or improvement as well as for processing of their products.
