Abstract

An educational PC-based simulator is developed to run on five Pentium IV PC's integrated to an Instructor Operator Station (IOS). The simulator features the integration of real avionics like a Multifunction Display and a Control Display Unit. The visual engine is powered by an off-the-shelf software tool called Vega-Prime and the dynamics of a helicopter and a fixed wing aircraft are modeled with sufficient detail for piloted simulation. Dynamic models are developed in modular blocks using Matlab/Simulink and are finally integrated into an xPC server. The visual environment involves the detailing of the landscape and are displayed on three LCD monitors. The IOS is custom designed to select an aircraft configuration, weather condition and to execute scenarios and finally play back data after a simulation routine. The outputs of the flight dynamics model are sent to the IOS and the 3-D visual simulation system, via a RS-232 link and the display output signals are sent to the MFD and CDU via a MIL-STD-1553 and ARINC-429 bus.
