Abstract

A multi-phasic health screening study on 96 Indians from southern California reservations is reported. Blood samples were run through a sequential multiple analyzer to determine 12 biochemical levels. Complete blood counts and urinalyses were performed and preliminary nutritional data were collected. Twelve elevated levels of true glucose, 16 abnormal lactic dehydrogenase, 4 alkaline phosphatases and 3 total bilirubins were found. A high rate of eosinophilia, a slight leucocytosis, and a significant degree of urinary tract infections is reported. Nutritional data revealed an absence of Vitamin C in the diet, plus an excessive commitment to starches with a correspondingly high degree of obesity.
