Abstract

The brand-new ISO/IEC MHEG-5 (Multimedia and Hypermedia information coding Expert Group) standard defines a representation model for interactive multimedia applications, including specifications for their final-form encoding, and supporting their distribution in a client/server architecture across heterogeneous platforms. This paper introduces the main MHEG-5 concepts and provisions, considering relationships to the DAVIC (Digital Audio VIsual Council) specifications. The focus is the description of a presentation system for MHEG-5 applications, in terms of both the functionalities it provides, and of the implementation approach. It supports spatial composition and temporal synchronization of media objects, as well as user interaction and navigation among different scenes.
