Abstract

Prescriptions for opioid pain medications have been on the rise in the United States. Sales of opioid analgesics quadrupled between 1999 and 2010 (ASIPP Opioid Guidelines, 2012). Issues regarding misuse, abuse, and dependence have been on the forefront and consequently, regulations and guidelines have been implemented to mitigate risks associated with consuming opioid medications. This study was developed to examine outcomes from a pilot program to reduce patients’ reliance on opioid medications at an academic multidisciplinary outpatient pain management center.
