Abstract

In general, connected systems encompass our ecological, physical, technological and socio-political worlds. Given that the era of the fourth industrial revolution and Society 5.0 is characterised by the fusing of these worlds, then ‘socio-technical cyber physical systems’ represent an intriguing class of interconnected systems. Reciprocity in how systems depend on each other means that cyber physical systems and social systems inextricably interwoven. From a resilience stance, social systems depend on, and leverage cyber physical systems to serve humanity. Resilience is a principle of the sustainability paradigm and an imperative for managing the development of interconnected systems. This paper uses a case study of a socio-technical cyber physical system to advance a multidisciplinary argument for the resilience of intertwined and interdependent social and cyber physical systems. Some imperatives for managing the resilience of connected systems are highlighted in the paper.
