Abstract

A multi-level/phase modulation system applicable to magnetic recording channels of digital VCRs for attaining higher recording density and bit-error rate has been developed. A recording density significantly higher than that attainable by the conventional NRZ modulation system is realized by employing a Trellis coded 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (TC-16QAM). An extremely high recording density of up to 0.83 μm 2/bit (0.78 Gbit/inch 2), attained by using an improved TC-16QAM, has been experimentally confirmed.
