Abstract

The author discusses urban transportation demand, the characteristics of public transportation, and previous projects that have attempted to mitigate transportation problems in Ghana. The author also describes the Urban Transport Policy and Action Program Study conducted by the World Bank. The study made three recommendations concerning transportation demand: full-cost recovery, efficient and equitable use of road space, and environmental protection. The Urban Transport Program arose from this study, which is financed primarily through the World Bank. The author believes that successful implementation of the Urban Transport Program will be the first step in addressing the growing transportation problem in Ghana.
