Abstract

A Mössabauer spectrometer based on a PDP-8L mini-computer has been designed and constructed. The computer supplies both the signal for the source motion and the data storage. The resulting spectrometer system has wide versatility of operation and data processing. It has been operating in a stable manner over the past two years in studies of iron oxidation and corrosion processes utilizing both the Mössbauer transmission and backscattering modes. The data processing capability is demostrated by the analysis and stripping of both the metal and oxide peaks from an electron backscattered spectrum of an oxidized iron surface.
