Abstract

It is recognized that an increasingly larger segment of enrollments at postsecondary institutions are adult learners. It is important, therefore, to better understand the reasons or motivations which have influenced these individuals to pursue further educational study. This study presents a typological framework of adult learners based on such motivations.Through the use of a multivariate cluster analysis procedure, five distinct types of adult learners were identified. The unique motivational profile for each type of adult learner was discussed within the context of the need for postsecondary institutions to be responsive to the range of educational motivations of their adult students.
