Abstract

There are four compounds of iron with thorium, namely Th7Fe3, ThFe3, ThFe5 and Th2Fe17. The spectra of Th7Fe3 did not display magnetic splitting. ThFe3, ThFe5 and Th2Fe17 all exhibit magnetic splitting in their Mossbauer spectra though the type of magnetic condensation in ThFe5 and Th2Fe17 is not established. It was possible to make an analysis of the energy splittings for iron atoms at positions of high symmetry. In ThFe3 the alpha -sites of high symmetry can be distinguished from the beta -sites of low symmetry. For ThFe5 the spectra consist of two six- line contributions. All the iron atom sites in Th2Fe17 have low symmetry and the spectra are complex.
