Abstract

Side scan sonar has been widely used for mapping seabed sediments and structures. The process produces an accurate and continuous sonar image of an area of seabed and is known as mosaicking. In order to obtain high resolution images, sonar transducers are usually towed. However, this method may result in dislocation and distortion of side scan sonar images due to unexpected effects, e.g., waves, and currents. It also causes difficulties for image mosaicking. The present paper proposes an image mosaic method based on feature matching on the seabed.
