Abstract

THE MONOTYPIC genera Astrephomene Pocock and Volvulina Playfair are two of the less common members of the colonial Volvocales. Although their coenobia are basically alike in construction, significant differences exist between them so that Astrephomene is placed in a separate family, Astrephomenaceae, whereas Volvulina is included in the Volvocaceae. Since both organisms are encountered rarely and since the original literature is not readily accessible, a fairly detailed description of each is given.
