Abstract
In the last 2 years, there were six articles published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery directly or indirectly addressing compounding factors in extremity limb salvage after vascular trauma. The latest addition by Siracuse et al is “Lower extremity vascular injuries caused by firearms have a higher risk of amputation and death compared with non-firearm penetrating trauma.”1 They queried the National Inpatient Sample database identifying 19,494 penetrating lower extremities requiring vascular repair that comprised 80.7% firearm- and 19.3% non-firearm-related injuries.
