Abstract

Nestled in a countryside location on the fringes of Beckenham in southeast London, UK, sits the Bethlem Royal Hospital. The world's oldest psychiatric hospital at nearly 800 years old, it moved to this location in 1930. The hospital provides specialist mental health care for people from across the UK, both residential and outpatient. You'd be forgiven for forgetting this is part of London—its 200 acres of green fields are dotted with trees and lovingly manicured flower beds. The building housing the Bethlem Gallery and Bethlem Museum of the Mind form the heart of the site.
