Abstract

A simplified Snyder test is described in which only 0.2 ml of culture medium is inoculated with a measured volume of saliva by means of a calibrated wire loop. The new test was evaluated by comparing the results of a series of standard Snyder tests and modified tests run, in parallel, on 400 saliva specimens. The new test gave results in good agreement with those obtained with the standard Snyder test; the differences were no greater than between duplicate standard Snyder tests. The colour change obtained with the new test tended to be more clear-cut and the results were easier to read and more readily reproducible.
