Abstract

Abstract Secondary aliphatic amines give a blue color with sodium nitroprusside and acetaldehyde in aqueous solution at pH 10. A closely analogous reaction of N-nitrosamines has been discovered. Aliphatic N-nitrosamines can give a similar blue color with a secondary aliphatic amine, sodium pentacyanoaquoferrate (II) and acetaldehyde at pH 10. This suggests strongly that N-nitrosamines are intermediates in the corresponding nitroprusside reaction. The new reaction may also have some value as a color test for N-nitrosamines.
