Abstract
A modified methylene blue method applied to specific area measurements is proposed. Its simplicity and accuracy allow its use on research vessels on wet and dry sediments. The method was tested on carbonate-rich sediments from the Cape Verde Abyssal Plain. Specific area and carbonate content are negatively correlated. A comparison of measured and calculated values offers rapid data on the lithogenous fraction, e.g. relative abundance of high-specific-area clays.
