Abstract

Previous reports from this facility described a method of blood culture sampling in three animal species using 0.2 ml or less of arterial and peripheral capillary blood.1,2 When ten or more organisms per milliliter of blood were present, the small sample method was as effective in detecting Escherichia coli bacteremia as was the standard blood culture technique using larger quantities of blood. However, when using the micro blood collecting tube method, contamination of the sample with air or skin microorganisms was a distinct problem. In this report, refinement of the micro sampling method was attempted to reduce contamination. Ten Beagle puppies (five male and five female), in the weight range between 5.7 to 9.0 kg, were utilized.
