Abstract

In this paper, a modified load sharing (MLS) technique is proposed for area electric power system (EPS). In a MLS technique, some of the distributed energy resources (DERs) are controlled by using proposed modified droop control (MDC) technique and the remaining DERs are controlled by using modified power control (MPC) technique. The proposed control scheme is designed to improve the dynamic performance of area EPS under various disturbances. The transients in area EPS under different loading conditions are mitigated at local EPS with proposed control scheme. During the islanded operating mode of local EPS, the respective DER is controlled by using modified voltage control (MVC) technique. Furthermore, the MDC technique is proposed to achieve the power sharing between the DERs in the area EPS. Whereas, the respective DER in local EPS compensates the reactive power which is demanded by the respective local EPS loads; this aided to voltage profile of area EPS unaffected with reactive power demand. By using MLS technique, the control complexity is reduced in achieving the active power sharing, reactive power compensation, unbalanced load current compensation, and harmonics compensation in area EPS. In addition, the area EPS frequency and voltage is maintained at nominal value with MLS technique. The performance of MLS technique for the area EPS is verified using real time simulator (RTS).
