Abstract

A method has been developed for the combustion in the oxygen bomb of petroleum products containing additives. The sample is enclosed in a gelatine capsule together with a limited amount of sodium peroxide-potassium nitrate accelerator mixture. The capsule is suspended in an oxygen bomb by means of an ignition wire which contacts the sample. A vial containing 5 ml of 5 per cent sodium hydroxide solution, which serves as absorbent, is placed into the bomb. Standard procedures were used for the determination of various elements in the washings. Samples of lubricating oil additives, asphaltenes, and engine deposits have been rapidly and completely oxidized.
