Abstract

In this paper, we study the potential of terrestrial 3D HDTV (High Definition Television) broadcasting by a modification and an extension of the ATSC 8-VSB transmission system. First, we analyze the performance and the limit of conventional ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee) 8-VSB (Vestigial Side Band) transmission system. By referencing the performance of ATSC systems, we examine the possibility of the transmission capacity increase at a reasonable TOV (Threshold of Visibility) by employing powerful LDPC (Low Density Parity Check) & BCH (Bose Chaudhuri Hocquenghem) codes instead of conventional RS (Reed Solomon) & TCM (Trellis Coded Modulation) codes, varying the code-rates, and increasing the modulation constellation. We do not consider the complete backward compatibility for the maximum transmission capacity increase, as in the DVB-T2 system.
