Abstract

As an extension of our previous work, a more complex and random model is developed to build random rectangular block heaps and analyse the force distributions at the base of the heaps, in which every block is put randomly, but with the limitation of stability. In 300 heaps examined, the results are similar to those of our previous work, but the individual force distribution at the base of the heap of blocks is more random than that of our previous work. In order to see the effect of the supporting lengths on the force distribution three sets of heaps with minimum limited supporting lengths of 0.3, 1.0, and 2.5 units are investigated. Because the supporting lengths vary randomly, the forces vary about the average shape, especially for the large-sized heaps. When the supporting length approaches the limit 0, the vertical force exerted on the support by materials above also approaches the limit 0. The outline and porosity of heaps may affect the force distribution.
