Abstract

The overturning of a motor vehicle passing along Route 8 at Yoneyama along the Japan Sea coast is reported to have occurred on 29 October, 1976, due to a strong onshore wind. This paper reports a model study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of this incident. The model terrain and vehicle was scaled down to one to 30. Wind velocity, pressure distribution along the terrain as well as model vehicle are measured, and the drag and lift force and the overturning moment of the model vehicle are calculated. The result of the study points to the possibility of studying the mechanism of overturning accident.
