Abstract

It is pointed out that the simultaneous excitation of right and left circularly polarized waves by ultrarelativistic nongyrating beams of electrons and positrons provide a possible mechanism for pulsar radio emission. By using a quasi-linear approximation, it is shwon that such a mechanism yields a huge brightness temperature T/sub b/>10/sup 25/ K, enough to explain the observed one. The radio spectrum obtained has a low-frequency cutoff or turnover and decreases approximately as ..omega../sup -3/ in the high-frequency range, a result insensitive to the assumed distribution function of the beam. Such a spectral behavior gives a good fit to some pulsar spectra. Some other features of pulsar radiation are also discussed in our model.
