Abstract

This paper is an attempt to construct a theoretical model of conjoint interviews in marriage counseling. It asserts that the appropriate conceptual model is that of a triad. Drawing heavily on the works of Georg Simmel and Theodore Caplow, ittfocuses on the relative power distribution ot the three persons in a conjoint interview situation and explicates, in model form, the consequences ot this distribution fior counseling. In particular it is concerned with coalition formation, therapeutic resistance, case management, and the question of choice between single and joint interviews.
