A model of pathways to artificial superintelligence catastrophe for risk and decision analysis
An artificial superintelligence (ASI) is an artificial intelligence that is significantly more intelligent than humans in all respects. Whilst ASI does not currently exist, some scholars propose that it could be created sometime in the future, and furthermore that its creation could cause a severe global catastrophe, possibly even resulting in human extinction. Given the high stakes, it is important to analyze ASI risk and factor the risk into decisions related to ASI research and development. This paper presents a graphical model of major pathways to ASI catastrophe, focusing on ASI created via recursive self-improvement. The model uses the established risk and decision analysis modelling paradigms of fault trees and influence diagrams in order to depict combinations of events and conditions that could lead to AI catastrophe, as well as intervention options that could decrease risks. The events and conditions include select aspects of the ASI itself as well as the human process of ASI research, development and management. Model structure is derived from published literature on ASI risk. The model offers a foundation for rigorous quantitative evaluation and decision-making on the long-term risk of ASI catastrophe.

Artificial superintelligence (ASI) is increasingly recognized as a significant future risk. This chapter surveys established methodologies for risk analysis and risk management as they can be applied to ASI risk. For ASI risk analysis, an important technique is to model the sequences of steps that could result in ASI catastrophe. Each step can then be studied to get an overall understanding of the total risk. These models are called fault trees or event trees. To help build the models, it can be helpful to ask experts for their judgments on various parts of the model. Experts don’t always get their judgments right so it’s important to ask them carefully, using established procedures from risk analysis. For ASI risk management, there are two approaches. One is to make ASI technology safer. The other is to manage the human process of ASI research and development, in order to steer it towards safer ASI and away from dangerous ASI. Risk analysis and the related field of decision analysis can help people make better ASI risk management decisions. In particular, the analysis can help identify which options would be the most cost-effective, meaning that they would achieve the largest reduction in ASI risk for the amount of money spent on them.

As artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more integrated into the field of healthcare, medical students need to learn foundational AI literacy. Yet, traditional, descriptive teaching methods of AI topics are often ineffective in engaging the learners. This article introduces a new application of cinema to teaching AI concepts in medical education. With meticulously chosen movie clips from "Enthiran (Tamil)/Robot (Hindi)/Robo (Telugu)" movie, the students were introduced to the primary differences between artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), artificial general intelligence (AGI), and artificial super intelligence (ASI). This method triggered encouraging responses from students, with learners indicating greater conceptual clarity and heightened interest. Film as an emotive and visual medium not only makes difficult concepts easy to understand but also encourages curiosity, ethical consideration, and higher order thought. This pedagogic intervention demonstrates how narrative-based learning can make abstract AI systems more relatable and clinically relevant for future physicians. Beyond technical content, the method can offer opportunities to cultivate critical engagement with ethical and practical dimensions of AI in healthcare. Integrating film into AI instruction could bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical application, offering a compelling pathway to enrich medical education in a rapidly evolving digital age.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This article introduces a new learning strategy that employs film to instruct artificial intelligence (AI) principles in medical education. Students experienced enhanced comprehension and increased interest in artificial intelligence. This narrative-driven, visually oriented process promises to incorporate technical and ethical AI literacy into medical curricula with enduring relevance and impact.

The integration of artificial intelligence into the system of higher education represents a turning point in the process of learning and teaching. The development of artificial intelligence has opened the way to personalized training, automation of administrative tasks and the introduction of innovative training methods. The purpose of the study was to analyze the practical aspects of using artificial intelligence in higher education institutions of Ukraine. It was determined that artificial intelligence is an organized set of information technologies, which makes it possible to perform complex complex tasks. There are three main categories of artificial intelligence: narrow-spectrum artificial intelligence, or Artificial Narrow Intelligence, general artificial intelligence, or Artificial General Intelligence, and artificial superintelligence, or Artificial Super Intelligence. The main educational services provided by artificial intelligence in institutions of higher education are the development and conduct of lectures, seminars and practical classes; teacher counseling; creation of educational programs and electronic courses; development of tasks and simulation of their solution; conducting various educational events; evaluation of the works of education seekers. Some examples of the use of artificial intelligence, in particular chatbots, in the higher education of Ukraine are analyzed and their potential for improving the educational process and forming professional skills is emphasized. An example of the use of GPT-3.5 in the Luhansk Educational and Scientific Institute for teaching foreign languages is presented. Such applications based on artificial intelligence as Thinkster and Duolingo and the main aspects of their use by students of higher education are characterized. Recommendations are provided for the successful implementation of artificial intelligence technologies in higher education.

Current challenges have accelerated the implementation of modern business concepts. Among the many practices of continuous business processes improvement is digitalization. Attention is focused on the benefits of digitalization in companies, which is to improve the processes quality, reduce their passage time, quickly fulfil orders, and hence increase customer loyalty. The concept of artificial intelligence is analysed, its three main types are identified: artificial narrow intelligence, general artificial intelligence, artificial superintelligence. Artificial narrow intelligence is focused on solving a narrowly defined, structured task; general artificial intelligence which is aimed at solving any problem, can respond to different environments and situations. Artificial superintelligence will be able to surpass people in absolutely everything, such as coping with creative tasks, decision-making and maintaining emotional relationships. The advantages of using artificial intelligence (accuracy in data processing, the ability to quickly analyse a large amount of information that will facilitate timely decision-making) are revealed. The main threats to the use of artificial intelligence (jobs disappearance, mass unemployment, loss of control over artificial intelligence – robots’ uncontrollability by humans) are also indicated. The most common technologies of artificial intelligence in enterprises (data science, machine learning, robotization) are considered. The business entities experience in the implementation of various artificial intelligence tools in operational activities, in the medical, legal, space, banking, educational spheres of activity, is presented. It was emphasized in the educational field that the annual increase in artificial intelligence is expected to reach 45% by 2030. It is also highlighted that artificial intelligence contributes to business development and global economic activity. The world's key players in the artificial intelligence market are considered, the top 10 world IT corporations are presented, the growth of their key performance indicators after the introduction of artificial intelligence technologies in goods and services is investigated.

Since artificial superintelligence has never existed, claims that it poses a serious risk of global catastrophe can be easy to dismiss as fearmongering. Yet many of the specific worries about such systems are not free-floating fantasies but extensions of patterns we already see. This essay examines thirteen distinct ways artificial superintelligence could go wrong and, for each, pairs the abstract failure mode with concrete precedents where a similar pattern has already caused serious harm. By assembling a broad cross-domain catalog of such precedents, I aim to show that concerns about artificial superintelligence track recurring failure modes in our world. This essay is also an experiment in writing with extensive assistance from artificial intelligence, producing work I couldn’t have written without it. That a current system can help articulate a case for the catastrophic potential of its own lineage is itself a significant fact; we have already left the realm of speculative fiction and begun to build the very agents that constitute the risk. On a personal note, this collaboration with artificial intelligence is part of my effort to rebuild the intellectual life that my stroke disrupted and hopefully push it beyond where it stood before.

The zenith of human civilisation is built on the pillars of its technological prowess. This achievement is attributed purely to the intelligence of the Human Brain, as the physical abilities of humans are somewhat inferior to many of other inhabiting species of the planet Earth. Intelligence has not only helpedHuman’s to be in the top of food chain but also made it the destiny maker of all the other species. Now one of human’s own creation – the Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging to rival the capabilities of human brain. Unlike human evolution, which is guided by Nature’s natural selection, the evolution of AI is guided by Human Scientist. Even at the present level which is below the Human Level Intelligence, AI has the potential to replace most of human labour and cause large scale catastrophic mass unemployment. On application of Moore’s Law and Law of Accelerated Return into the evolution journey of AI, arrival of Human Level Intelligence in machines is inevitable and almost immediately, AI will reach the level of Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI), an entity which is thousand times more intelligent than the present known Human Intelligence. Although experts are divided on the question that whether ASI will be beneficial or detrimental or totally indifferent to the mankind, many of them believe that emergence of ASI will lead to a event called ‘Technological Singularity’ resulting the end for mankind.

The rise of Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) marks a pivotal transformation in the global cybersecurity landscape. Surpassing the limitations of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), ASI introduces systems capable of autonomous reasoning, instantaneous threat response, and strategic adaptability far beyond human capability. While its defensive applications hold immense promise, the offensive potential of ASI presents an equally formidable challenge. Real-world events such as the SolarWinds infiltration in 2020 and the NotPetya ransomware outbreak in 2017 illustrate the devastating impact of AI-augmented cyber operations on national infrastructure and global commerce. These cases underscore the urgency of preparing for more advanced threats as ASI technology matures. This paper investigates the dual role of ASI in modern cyber conflict through a mixed-method approach combining empirical case study analysis, comparative evaluation of AGI and ASI capabilities, and scenario-based modeling. Particular emphasis is placed on examining how ASI alters traditional cyberattack vectors and reshapes defensive paradigms. The study further explores the integration of advanced countermeasures, including blockchain-backed data integrity systems, zero-trust security models, and autonomous deception frameworks. In addressing the wider implications, the paper also considers the ethical, legal, and governance challenges posed by opaque, autonomous decision-making in high-stakes security contexts. By mapping current capabilities and foreseeable trajectories, the analysis offers a policy-oriented framework to guide the responsible development and secure integration of ASI into national defense infrastructures.

The likely near future creation of artificial superintelligence carries significant risks to humanity. These risks are difficult to conceptualise and quantify, but malicious use of existing artificial intelligence by criminals and state actors is already occurring and poses risks to digital security, physical security and integrity of political systems. These risks will increase as artificial intelligence moves closer to superintelligence. While there is little research on risk management tools used in artificial intelligence development, the current global standard for risk management, ISO 31000:2018, is likely used extensively by developers of artificial intelligence technologies. This paper argues that risk management has a common set of vulnerabilities when applied to artificial superintelligence which cannot be resolved within the existing framework and alternative approaches must be developed. Some vulnerabilities are similar to issues posed by malicious threat actors such as professional criminals and terrorists. Like these malicious actors, artificial superintelligence will be capable of rendering mitigation ineffective by working against countermeasures or attacking in ways not anticipated by the risk management process. Criminal threat management recognises this vulnerability and seeks to guide and block the intent of malicious threat actors as an alternative to risk management. An artificial intelligence treachery threat model that acknowledges the failings of risk management and leverages the concepts of criminal threat management and artificial stupidity is proposed. This model identifies emergent malicious behaviour and allows intervention against negative outcomes at the moment of artificial intelligence’s greatest vulnerability.
